To prepare students for success in their professional as well as personal lives, they need to engage in complex cognitive tasks that extend past basic recall, comprehension, and understanding. Not only do new standards and assessments require it, but our ever-changing world does, too.
In this webinar, former Boston Public Schools district leader and ThinkCERCA’s Director of Professional Learning and School Design, Kavita Venkatesh, will explore writing through the perspective of disciplinary literacy.
Dr. Venkatesh will review research-based strategies for teaching students how to think and write like a scientist, mathematician, historian, reporter, or even a poet. These strategies can be used in various grade levels and will support students as they work towards meeting the expectations of standards.
In addition to building students’ background knowledge, writing in content areas pushes students to go beyond evaluation. The simple act of creating—i.e. writing—strengthens their communication skills and pushes their learning to a deeper level.
